About 200 pandas,and they sleepby mid-morning.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. We run the morning slot: gate at opening, bears at breakfast.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding holds about two hundred giant pandas across its breeding centre, nursery, sub-adult enclosure, and ageing-panda areas, plus a resident red-panda population climbing the lower paths. The base sits about ten kilometres north of central Chengdu, opens daily at 07:30 (last entry 17:00 in peak season), and is open every day of the year. The single thing that decides whether you see active pandas or sleeping mounds of fur is timing. Pandas are most active between 07:30 and 10:00 when keepers stage the bamboo feed; by mid-morning most adults retreat to shade and sleep. We run the morning slot: gate at opening, bears at breakfast, out before the day-tour coaches fill the paths.

the way we arrange it.
Out of Chengdu at 06:45
Coffee on the road.
Pickup from your Chengdu hotel at 06:45. The base sits about ten kilometres north of central Chengdu, thirty to forty-five minutes depending on traffic. Pre-booked entry tickets are already in the car against your passport details. We are at the gate by 07:15 for the 07:30 opening; the keepers are staging bamboo and the pandas are awake.
The sub-adult enclosure
Yearlings, climbing.
The sub-adult enclosure is where the one- to two-year-olds live: six to ten yearlings at any time, climbing, falling off ropes, sleeping on each other. They stay active until late morning. This is the photograph everyone wants, and the reason the morning slot exists.
The nursery viewing window
Newborns through glass.
The nursery house holds the actual newborns when there are recent births: pink, palm-sized, behind a one-way viewing window. Cub viewing is seasonal. It depends on the year's births and the recovery period the keepers set. Your guide checks the day's nursery schedule before we go in. When cubs are present, this is usually the moment that changes the trip.
Questions worth
answering early.
Yes, if you go in the morning slot. The 07:30 to 10:00 window is when keepers stage the bamboo feed and the adults are awake. By mid-morning most retreat to shade and sleep, and by noon you would be watching breathing fur. The morning slot is the difference between an active panda visit and a sleeping panda visit. Cub viewing in the nursery is seasonal; we check the day's schedule before we go in.
