• Will I actually see active pandas?

  Yes, if you go in the morning slot. The 07:30 to 10:00 window is when keepers stage the bamboo feed and the adults are awake. By mid-morning most retreat to shade and sleep, and by noon you would be watching breathing fur. The morning slot is the difference between an active panda visit and a sleeping panda visit. Cub viewing in the nursery is seasonal; we check the day's schedule before we go in.

• How do tickets work?

  Tickets are timed-entry, released seven days ahead through the official Chengdu Panda Base portal and the WeChat mini-program, against your passport details under real-name booking. We book against your trip before you fly. The base sells out a day in advance during peak holidays (Spring Festival, Labour Day, October National Day, summer school break), which is when most overseas travellers run into trouble. The portal does not always accept overseas cards.

• Is there a behind-the-scenes panda keeper experience?

  The base runs a volunteer programme that is genuinely behind-the-scenes: preparing bamboo, cleaning enclosures, observing under a keeper's supervision. It is application-only, runs on its own cadence, and is not a same-day product. We do not offer it as a publicly-bookable add-on because it is not. Travellers who specifically want the volunteer day can apply through us with several months' lead time.

• Should I visit the original base or Dujiangyan?

  The original Chengdu base is the bigger, denser visit: about two hundred bears, the nursery, the sub-adult enclosure, the red pandas. The Dujiangyan base is a separate facility about sixty kilometres west, lower-density and quieter, smaller bear population. For most first-time visits we route the original base because the keeper density and the nursery are the substance. We route Dujiangyan only when the original is overrun (Spring Festival, October National Day) or when a traveller specifically wants the gentler version.

• What about kids?

  The base is the best part of Chengdu for travellers with children. The paths are stroller-friendly, the electric shuttle runs the main loop for tired legs, the viewing windows are at toddler height. The morning slot suits kids' attention spans. By the time they would lose interest, the adult pandas are sleeping anyway and we are on our way out. We brief age-appropriate routes when you tell us who is travelling.

• Do I need a visa to visit?

  It depends on the passport you hold. Ordinary Australian, British and New Zealand passports enter mainland China visa-free for up to thirty days, confirmed through 31 December 2026, covering tourism, family visits, transit, and short business. Many other passports qualify under the broader scheme. United States and Canadian passports need a tourist visa under current rules, and we manage the application end to end as part of your booking.
