• Which ship do you book?

  The premium operator whose top-deck cabins carry a private veranda. We will not name them in marketing copy because the ship selection is part of our active vetting and the fleet ages over time. What is the right ship in 2026 may not be in 2028. Our pre-trip notes name the specific ship we have selected for your dates, the cabin tier, the two operators we will not put guests on, and why.

• Downstream or upstream?

  Downstream from Chongqing to Yichang is the standard run: four nights, the gorges with the current behind you, Chongqing as the more interesting embarkation city. Upstream from Yichang is five nights with a slower pace and gives more time on each gorge but starts in a less interesting city. For most first cruises we route downstream. Upstream is a stronger answer if you have already seen Chongqing or specifically want the slower river days.

• When is the best season to cruise?

  April to early June and September to early November. Summer is the high-water season, when the gorges look smaller because the river is fuller, and humidity is high. Winter is the low-water season, when the cliffs stand taller above the water but the cold and the river fog can be heavy. The shoulder months balance water level, visibility, and temperature. Spring carries the higher chance of mist on Wu Gorge at sunrise.

• Is the cruise heavy on the wallet?

  The veranda cabin tier on the operator we book is not the cheapest tier on the river. There are budget cruise options that run the same route at a third of the price. The difference is the cabin, the veranda, the shore excursion programme, the food, and the absence of relentless onboard upsell. The all-in price for the cruise leg is named in your quote before you confirm. Travellers who want to compare cheaper options are welcome to; we explain plainly what changes.

• What about kids?

  Children from about age eight up tend to enjoy the cruise. The gorges are visually spectacular, the shore excursion is a small-boat ride which kids like, and there is enough time on deck and in the cabin. Under-eights tend to find the four nights long. The ship is comfortable but not engineered for very young children: no kids' club, no kids' menu beyond the standard. We brief honestly when you tell us who is travelling.

• Do I need a visa to visit?

  It depends on the passport you hold. Ordinary Australian, British and New Zealand passports enter mainland China visa-free for up to thirty days, confirmed through 31 December 2026, covering tourism, family visits, transit, and short business. Many other passports qualify under the broader scheme. United States and Canadian passports need a tourist visa under current rules, and we manage the application end to end as part of your booking.
